Plant Sale
As part of the Sustainability Elevated initiative launched in 2021 by Arizona Water Company (AWC) and the Town of Superior, Mayor Mila Besich requested that the program find a way for residents of Superior to increase the number of native plants in their landscapes. Her goal is to support pollinators and strengthen the Sonoran ecosystem. Through a partnership with the Boyce Thomspon Arboretum (BTA), the bi-annual plant sale initiative was developed.
Plant sales like this play a vital role in promoting water conservation, reducing the need for high-maintenance vegetation, and reconnecting residents with the natural beauty of their region. By choosing native plants, homeowners can create resilient landscapes that require less irrigation, fewer chemicals, and provide habitat for birds, bees, and butterflies.
Inspired by the seasonal sales hosted by Boyce Thompson Arboretum, AWC now offers Spring and Fall plant sales, at no cost to customers in Superior. Participants can select two plants from a preselected list based on what best suits the resident’s landscape needs (such as sunlight preferences, water demand, overall landscape design, etc.). These plants are selected by BTA staff and are usually grown in house, making them more likely to survive in the local desert environment. By participating in the sale, Superior residents are also contributing to the Arboretum, further supporting the economy of the Town.
